On the coldest of cold Victorian mornings, we thought it would be a good idea to send Shura down to visit the Morning Mermaids in Point Lonsdale. What a bunch of amazing women! Every morning, no matter what the weather, these ladies arrive at Point Lonsdale beach at sunrise for their morning swim.
Some might say they’re crazy, and as I stood on the shore in multiple layers of clothing including a jacket and a coat, I certainly thought they were a bit on the looney side. But in they went, some in wetsuits, others just their togs, plunging into the icy cold water with not a care in the world. Not a grimace to be seen, just straight into action.
Now apparently there are a whole lot of health benefits associated with cold water swimming. Improved circulation, improved immune system, calorie burning, improved skin tone and health, it reduces stress and gives you a good old endorphin high.
Arriving at the beach in various states of undress and even in their dressing gowns, the buzz around these ladies is so vibrant. The chitter chatter and welcoming waves, smiles and hugs show just how connected the mermaids are. These are some of the happiest ladies you’ll meet.
Another element to this group is their genuine love and support for each other, they really care. If anyone’s gong through a tough time, they band together to support their fellow mermaids.
I’m yet to try this out for myself, I think I’ll wait for slightly warmer conditions, but if the Point Lonsdale Morning Mermaids are anything to go by, cold water swimming does you wonders. Some of the mermaids are into their eighties, but I swear they have more energy than me at half their age.
What a fabulous and inspirational bunch of ladies!
And by the way, it should be noted that Shura dipped one toe in the water and ran back to his dressing gown. Nice try merman.
