Happy People
It is estimated that over 20 million people are trafficked around the world each year for sex or forced labour. These are horrifying statistics. Kristi Van Es embodies the concept of a conscious change maker. After a visit to India in 2012 she was struck by the plight of young Indian women being sold into the sex trade. Within 12 months she had left her job as a teacher in Australia, travelled to India and started The Offspring Project, a not for profit dedicated to restoring women who are rescued from the sex trade into meaningful lives and occupations. The Offspring Project works with law enforcement agencies on the ground in India with their mission being to provide follow up vocational training, education, empowerment and a safe place to live in community hubs after rescue.
We were blown away with Kristi’s passion and achievements so far.
“It’s the beautiful thing after a few months where they start to realise that there is another option and you see that lightbulb go on and they’re like actually I want to be a beautician, I want to be a sewer or I want to be this, and you start to see their personality and them come out…”
Happy Mind
Clinical Psychologist Chris Mackey, again brings us his Happy Mind segment for Season 2 of Destination Happiness.
Chris has 38 years’ clinical experience and heads up a large private psychology clinic employing 12 psychologists. He specialises in assisting people’s recovery from post-traumatic stress including complex trauma reactions. Chris is author of the book, Synchronicity: Empower your life with the gift of coincidence and has a special interest in applying positive psychological strategies to enhance personal wellbeing and success.
For this week’s Happy Mind segment, Chris speaks to us about the importance on setting intentions and being active in pursuing them.
Happy Pets
Spike the Surfing Dog
The story of Spike and his beloved owner Rob Lorenzon will bring a smile to your face. Spike was a rescue dog who was adopted by Rob the day before he was scheduled to be put down.
Rob thinks he’s part kelpie, part border-collie, part ridgeback, and perhaps part penguin!
Spike was crowned the 2018 Australian champion surfing dog at the Noosa Festival of Surfing and this happy pet clearly loves a day at the beach in the waves with his devoted owner Rob.
Wellbeing Tip
Lindsay Ingleton is a Naturopath who is extremely passionate about all aspects of health and wellbeing. She seeks to educate, motivate and empower her patients at every opportunity. She believes there is nothing more valuable in this lifetime than health and happiness and her favourite quote is “our greatest wealth is health”.
On this week’s show, Lindsay teaches us about the importance of maintaining our microbiome and some of the best ways that we can do this.
Random Acts of Happiness
Too often we forget to thank those around us who deserve acknowledgement every now and again. This week, students from St. Roberts Primary School took the opportunity to thank some of their favourite teachers for all of the help they’ve given them over their journey together.
Word Vitamin
We welcome Cynthia Morton as a weekly presenter on Series 2 of Destination Happiness. Cynthia brings a wealth of life experience to her emotional fitness platform. Her unique approach to self-help is informed by her back story of surviving childhood abuse, domestic violence and being a recovered alcoholic and drug addict. She has a trifecta of publications. Cynthia writes a regular Emotional Fitness column in Style Magazine and her Daily Word Vitamins can also be found on balancebydeborahhutton.com.
This week, Cynthia talks to us about the importance of distinguishing pleasure with happiness and how seeking instant gratification in order to increase our level of pleasure can have a detrimental effect to our long-term happiness.
Happy Bodies
Benny Owen was living the Rockstar life, although at 127 kilograms, he felt something had to change. It was at that point that Benny started his switch to slim. Benny made the decision at 37 years of age that by 40, he’d be on a tropical island beach with a 6-pack.
Along with his partner, Leilani Gaze, Ben authored the book Switch to Slim: 7 Simple Healthy Lifestyle Changes Anyone Can Make. The book, along with their Skinny Green Co line of nutritional beverages is part of a suite of products and services that Benny offers. He has also partnered up with friend of Destination Happiness, Pete Murray for a wellbeing retreat incorporating music and fitness in Byron Bay.
Benny teaches us the importance of setting goals.
Happy Eating
George Georgievski has a passion for feeding his girls Anela and Kiki. He’s not only on about hunting and gathering for healthy and fun food for their lunchboxes but also involving the girls in the process and educating them along the way. This week George gives us some great tips for fussy eaters.
Thanks George for inspiring us lunch box makers right across the country.
